Chapter 38: Patchtricia Considers Becoming a Hat

Patchtricia was contemplating in one of her favorite spots, in a bed under the windows, and was considering her options in life. One thought she had was that she might make a fine fur hat for some well garbed person. She would keep them warm, and with her excellent balance skills would likely stay put, though maintaining that balance might cause her to dig her claws into their scalp; a small price to pay for a fine hat as herself. Inspired by this thought as cartoons were on TV she composed the following poem which she read to Pawline and Lamont:

“I think I’d be a great hat
A great head mat
For someone on whose head I’d sat.
Much better than a chinchilla rat
Much less a vampire bat.”

Lamont and Paw looked at her agast and after a small pause Lamont said:

“You’d like to be a hat?
some think you’re might be too fat,
So, some may say “scat”
To your being on their pate
You likely fall off and go splat.”

“Humph!” replied Patch archedly. “You’re just jealous you didn’t think of if first or lack my imagination. I think I’d be a perfectly good, hat in fact, I’d make a wonderful hat for a discerning furless being that needed a nice warm hat such as me.”

“Well,” considered Lamont, “Though I still think it is a silly notion and not nearly dignified for we fine felines. I must admit that human beings do the strangest things with their cats.”

“Too true,” said Paw. On TV we see them all the time dressing their fine cats in silly furless beings apparel. Put them in sweaters, suits and dresses. They make them wear silly hats, and even put shoes on their feet. They even make them wear glasses and other strange stuff. Yuck.”

“You know,” continued Lamont, “I believe I heard the other day our furless servants talking about their granddaughter who had a fine and handsome and quit dignified cat appropriately named ‘Bentley’ that she had sheared to look like a lion.”

“You’ve got to be kidding,” meowed Patch. “How undignified. Not that our cousins the lions are not fine creatures and most handsome, but we’re not lions. What on earth was she thinking of?”

“Worse yet,” added Lamont. “This is the granddaughter who is a veterinarian, someone who looks after we wee critters. What was she thinking? Some furless ones can sure be silly. Bentley looked so handsome before.

“Oh yes, indeed,” replied Patch and Paw in unison. “Quite silly.”

P.S. Said granddaughter is wonderful person who has always loved animals and is an excellent veterinarian. Beyond her practice she is providing a service to help animal owners help their pets with in-home hospice and euthanansia service. This is the link to her website.
