That seems to be what a number of
Republicans are doing today. Hardly anyone seems to remember the Republican Party
of old that safeguarded traditions, adhered to economic realities, and were the
loyal opposition to Democrats who wanted to move too rapidly for change. But
some of today’s Republicans are beginning to voice their dissatisfaction with
their current nonsense positions:
“I didn’t leave the Republican Party, it
left me.” – former FL Republican governor Charlies Crist 9/6/2012.”
“Anyone from New York or New Jersey who
contributes one penny to the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee should
have their head examined.” – Rep. Peter King (R-NY) 1/2/2013.
When the Republicans voted to postpone
relief for Hurricane Sandy relief that became the straw that broke the camel’s
back and their allegiance to their former party. The party seems to be out of
touch with common people and along with a lot of Democrats blindly cater to the
fat cats who will contribute the most to their campaigns to be non
representatives of the people.
It may be abandon ship time for many. The northeastern
states (VT, ME MA, RI, CT and NH) did not elect a single Republican for the
House in the last election. Only Pennsylvania, via gerrymandering, has a House
majority, 13 – 5.
The so-called people’s Tea Party, is now
seen for what it is, a billionaires toady, are forcing what moderate
Republicans that remain to re-examine their futures.
One can hope that this movement will become
more nationwide and if 17 of the moderate Republicans abandon sinking ships,
the Democratic majority would be restored and something constructive might get
done for the country.
In my opinion if a Democratic majority
prevailed the politics of the Republicans prior to Reagan would return, we
would just call them Democrats instead because the Democratic Party itself has
moved so far right. I remain hopeful that sometime we will wake up, smell the
coffee, remove lobbyists from Washington, make it illegal for past congressional
leaders to advocate for past financially supportive groups, then progressives
might come to the fore and the country could move forward morally again, and
democracy would return. I did see a flying pig the other day…it was on a pastor’s
wife’s necklace.
“The party right now is a holding company that’s devoid of a soul and it will be filled up with ideas over time and leaders will take their proper place. We can’t be known as a party that’s fear-based and doesn’t believe in math.”
ReplyDelete"To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy. The minute that the Republican Party becomes the party – the anti-science party, we have a huge problem. We lose a whole lot of people who would otherwise allow us to win the election in 2012." -Jon Huntsman, served in Reagan, Bush 1,
Bush 2 and Obama administrations & very successful governor of Utah. He was outpolled by
Bachman, Santorum, Perry and Gingrich in the GOP primaries...
