Haiti, where poverty runs rampant and disaster follows disaster
may have some really good news. Precious metals: gold, silver and copper
perhaps worth 20 billion dollars may lie beneath the tropical ridges of the
country’s northeastern mountains. The Dominican Republic also may dig into this
treasure from the other side of the mountain; perhaps $40 billion there.
I can’t think of a better place to find these precious metals in
a country of 10 million where most live on a $1.25 a day. The Haitian
government’s annual budget is $1 billion half of which is provided from foreign
aid.
The hiccup in all of this is the Haitian government is inept and
foreign companies may take terrible advantage of them. But wouldn’t this be a
wonderful windfall for a people in need if the common good is kept foremost.
God provides the minerals; humans must be responsible stewards of their use.
